A note to the reader: ‘sponsor’ in the passage quoted by Simon Garner above, is intended to be ironic. As Simon makes clear, Sky Television and the many other institutions mentioned have not sought to advertise on pirate websites. Nonetheless, regardless of whether it flows through anonymous channels, off-shore holding companies, and currency exchangers, the money that Sky Television pays for the advertising is still the same money that arrives at the pirate websites. This advertising money is in many cases the websites’ sole source of income, meaning that the websites’ sole economic incentive for growth is to increase advertising revenue. Moreover, like Ted Danson’s philanthropy, advertising revenue may be anonymous, but everyone knows where it’s from. So, while SkyTv may not “sponsor” ProjectFreeTv, they and the other advertisers provide its revenue, in return for exposure. My interest is in this exchange, and how it relates to copyright.

"In addition to ads for Asian brides and online casinos, and Microsoft and Apple, I encountered ads from the BNZ, ANZ, Subway NZ, Farmers. I found ads for the New Zealand Herald, Flip, and Vodafone, who obviously aren’t too concerned about copyright infringement. Even Sky Television sponsors online file sharing."

These advertisers are almost certainly unaware that their ads are running on those sites. The ads will be coming through ad networks like Google AdSense. Advertisers simply give the networks their creative, some broad category/demographic targeting criteria, and a budget. Then the networks place those ads on publisher sites around the internet, and take a share of the revenue. The advertisers don't say "I want to advertise on TvLinks" or "I want to advertise on file sharing sites", so any "sponsorship" of such sites happens unwittingly.
