Glory! I never knew there is a 5th "Borrower" book! I encountered the series in my mid-teens and loved them - the sheer practicality of what they all do, and the magicality of tiny tiny humans...
Many thanks Gordon!
And to add to the joy, the news that Studio Ghibli has made an animation- waua! My animation gods are Hiyao Miyazaki & Pixar and I now have 4 treats in store-

Great review. I went through a phase of reading/rereading classic children's books a few years ago (in my late 30s); the Borrowers held up very well, as did the Borribles series.

The popularity of something like Ann of Green Gables in Japan may have something to with the World Masterpiece anime series that aired in Japan. [Of course, that may instead be why one was made)]. A great work of (western) children's literature was produced longform (often 50 or more episodes), each year. Too few of those series ever made it to New Zealand, but I remember bits of some of them even now.

If the new Borrowers - though a film, rather than a series - is anything like those, it will be excellent.

Thanks for the reminder of this excellent author's work - I had no idea she was still publishing in 1982.

Sounds like the film will be well worth seeing.
