Jeremy: You're hopelessly mistaken if you think boycotting Myanmar is of any use to anyone. However, I can't be bothered convincing someone who sounds like a disconnected-from-reality wrap-his-arms-around-the-world type.

People backpacking in Myanmar do a shit load more for the oppressed locals than do-gooders in OECD countries crying "it's not fair".

I very much doubt Aung San Su Kyi still believes a tourism boycott is of any help to her people. In fact, she's actually said it isn't. Your literature is out of date and biased.

Surely "by far the biggest thing" keeping tourist out of Burma is the fact that the democratically elected leader of the country - Aung San Suu Kyi - has specifically asked tourists not to visit Burma. See: http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/action_holiday.html and http://www.rebound88.net/sp/eco/stour-boycott.html

Even if after weighing up the facts you decide the National League for Democracy is mistaken in its belief that a tourism boycott will put pressure on the regime - isn't it a tad arrogant to flout the closest thing there is to a democratic representative of the Burmese people?
