"Elves and Fairies" remains my favorite book from childhood - maybe even as an adult! I can still see those lovely illustrations in my mind. He was able to capture the magic of childhood fantasies and dreams in his illustrations. I can still see those beautiful marbles and that tiny little fairy scarf! And and another favorite is the one about the bear that grows wings so he can spot the salmon fleet coming in. I love them all!
So different from the slap-dash of children's books today.

Wonderful! Thanks for talking about Garth and so wonderfuly and knowledgeably! I just want to correct something. Though Garth's father was at time making a living as an illustrator for magazines, he was first and formost a very talented painter. It is very sad that that fact is unknown. I just thought I would mention it. wonderful blog, Thanks!

What a bolt out of the blue. 'The Sailor Dog' was my favourite book as a young boy. I read it to my oldest daughter, now 7, and now I'm reading it to my youngest girl who is 2. Every night! She loves this book, I'll suggest some other books to her and she always says "Read Scuppers Daddy."

Everything in your article puts it so succintly - Garth Williams was the personification of a true artist.

Thank you for a first class article about a truly talented illustrator. Garth Williams' masterpieces are a welcome antidote to the ugly and crass drawings which pass for illustrations in contemporary children's books.

Congratulations upon your site. I'll follow it with interest.

An oasis of charm in a desert of pragmatism and expediency. Creativity and being observant and childlike don't have enough currency; neither does beauty, a close relative of charm.
